Dispersion properties of silicon nanophotonic waveguides investigated with Fourier optics.

We experimentally investigate the dispersion relation of silicon-on-insulator waveguides in the 1.5 microm wavelength range by using a technique based on far-field Fourier-space imaging. The phase information of the propagating modes is transferred into the far field either by linear probe gratings positioned 1 microm away from the waveguide core or by residual gratings located on the sidewalls...

Ultra-compact silicon nanophotonic modulator with broadband response

Electro-optic modulators have been identifi ed as the key drivers for optical communication and signal processing. With an ongoing miniaturization of photonic circuitries, an outstanding aim is to demonstrate an on-chip, ultra-compact, electro-optic modulator without sacrifi cing bandwidth and modulation strength. While silicon-based electro-optic modulators have been demonstrated, they require...

Inverse dispersion engineering in silicon waveguides

We present a numerical tool that searches an optimal cross-section geometry of silicon-on-insulator waveguides given a target dispersion profile. The approach is a gradient-based multidimensional method whose efficiency resides on the simultaneous calculation of the propagation constant derivatives with respect to all geometrical parameters of the structure by using the waveguide mode distribut...

Dispersion engineering of photonic crystal waveguides with ring-shaped holes.

The geometry of photonic crystal waveguides with ring-shaped holes is optimized to minimize dispersion in the slow light regime. We found geometries with a nearly constant group index in excess of 20 over a wavelength range of 8 nm. The origin of the low dispersion is related to the widening of the propagating mode close to the lower band gap edge.

Tailoring repulsive optical forces in nanophotonic waveguides.

We describe a mechanism and propose design strategies to selectively tailor repulsive-gradient-optical forces between parallel, nanophotonic waveguides via morphology augmented by slow-light band-edge modes. We show that at small separation lengths, the repulsive force can be made nearly 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of standard dielectric waveguides with a square cross section. The in...
